What does the base allowance actually cover?

The base allowable expenses are paid to you monthly throughout the pregnancy, designed to cover:

  • Childcare for your own children during appointments, procedures, and recovery
  • Household help and general pregnancy-related support
  • Maternity clothing, prenatal vitamins, and day-to-day pregnancy expenses
  • Mileage and local transportation to and from appointments
  • Phone and communication costs related to the journey

Long-distance travel, legal fees, and life insurance are always covered separately — they don't come out of your allowance.

* All figures are estimates in Canadian dollars based on current CSO contracts. Actual amounts are confirmed in your individual surrogacy agreement. In Canada, surrogate compensation is structured as reimbursement of allowable expenses.

Common questions

About surrogate compensation

Is surrogate compensation taxable in Canada?

In Canada, surrogate compensation is structured as reimbursement of allowable expenses, not income. As a result, it is generally not considered taxable income. We recommend speaking with a tax professional about your specific situation.

When are payments made?

Base allowable expenses are reimbursed monthly throughout the pregnancy once you submit the required documentation. Out-of-pocket expenses begin once pregnancy is confirmed. Travel is reimbursed per trip.

Does experience level affect my compensation?

Yes. Experienced surrogates who have completed a previous surrogacy journey typically receive higher base compensation, reflecting the value of that experience and track record.

Are legal fees really covered for me?

Yes. Canadian law requires that surrogates receive independent legal advice (ILA) — and the intended parents cover those legal fees on your behalf. This is a standard part of every CSO agreement.
